s1nglewing
Digging around in old newspapers and I find that Gulfport were once the Tigers. Wiggins (Stone Co.) were the Lumberjacks. Magee were the Burrheads until the 1940's. Rosedale used to be the Bulldogs - and Benoit's mascot was the Broncos. Almost forgot... Vicksburg were the Greenies. Any others that have changed mascots over time?

MSSportsGuy
Recently Caledonia changed their name from the Confederates to the Cavaliers. I wonder if any of these mascot changes came about when there was integration or school closures to give the newly formed student body a sense of community. Of course when larger consolidations take place there is usually a new mascot adopted for the newly built and named school. Years back some NCAA affiliated institutions eliminated Native American mascots (Louisiana Monroe, Arkansas State, and West Georgia come to mind). Florida State is still the Seminoles and closer to home MC is still the Choctaws. There are many high school mascots in Mississippi with Rebels or some variation of it as well those with Native American connotations (Warriors, Indians, Braves). To some these are problematic but I suspect most will not change anytime soon.
s1nglewing
Rosedale and Benoit were changed due to integration. Benoit (and a few other Delta schools) were closed rather than integrate. On another note, I found that Biloxi HS was the first team in Mississippi - according to the article "high school or college" - to play a lighted night game on September 27, 1930. They beat Purvis 58-0 under the lights.
Tomcat77
Caledonia name was not due to any population change, it was simply due to the changing times. I graduated from there in

I’m mean literally the Choctaws are the original inhabitants of the majority of Mississippi and Alabama, what’s wrong with honoring them? Towns, counties, heck the Mecca of college football is Tuscaloosa that is Choctaw for black warrior. Also warrior, chief, or brave could be used for any military figure throughout history, heck they are all of French origin. I doubt the Choctaw people have a problem with those mascots, now redskins or savages they probably don’t care for.
pancho
It's all about being PC and to appease certain groups as far as the mascot names mentioned.

I just said "to some these are problematic". We've seen the Cleveland Indians change their name, Washington Redskins, and my post referenced some NCAA schools that were pressured into changing mascots years back. That's it. I tend to agree with your line of thinking.
