Harrison Central

If a coach can get north of 20 wins at Harrison Central, they've accomplished something.  They'd be guaranteed to have more losses than wins, but that's just the nature of the beast.  Before West Harrison was built, Harrison Central was the largest high school in Mississippi.  Even then they struggled, but with their numbers you knew there was talent walking the halls.  It's probably very much the same today.  Whoever gets this job needs to actively recruit the halls to have a chance at some success there.  If they don't do that, they'll continue the normal historical pattern of Harrison Central.

Harrison Central (like most schools on the coast) do not believe you can prioritize athletics and education together. They do not support athletics as a school the way you need to. The few that do (Gulfport, Picayune, Ocean Springs) are the ones you see being uber successful year in and out. I believe d'Iberville is getting there and you are seeing it as their athletic teams have gotten better recently. Until a place like Harrison Central makes athletics a priority, they will continue to flounder. No coach worth their salt is going to want to coach there. Head Football Coaches in today's world do not want to be tied to kids and teaching 2-3 blocks a day. They do not want to have to fight to get coaches off in time for afternoon athletics block or actual planning time for them. It can absolutely be done. Most schools on the coast do not want to.

What head football coach anywhere teaches 2-3 blocks a day?

Pretty common at a lot of schools along the coast and other places. I know Lewis Sims taught English at Moss Point and Pascagoula so one of his assistants could have the PE job. I know Sam Huff at East Central was teaching PE and Health for 2 blocks.

Gulfport is a basketball town, traditionally, so that makes sense.  Football can be successful though if the new coach can fight through the negative culture and inspire the upcoming classes to buy in.  The problem is no one has stayed long enough to do that.

Any update or word on this one?? I have not heard many names period for this one.

Don't take this the wrong way, but would a job like this one even be considered a resume' builder?  If the pay is decent, I think there would be some to apply but it's probably not widely publicized at all.

Probably the worst 7A job in the south.  No history, no expectations, poor support, north Gulfport ... the kinda job that leads to alcoholism.

The other problem the quantity of athletes that attend Gulfport but live in Harrison Central boundaries. That's got to stop to be successful at Harr Central

West Harrison is also getting more of the athletes that previously would have attended Harrison Central.  It's not all about those who want to attend a better all around school at Gulfport.  West Harrison football has gotten so much better.  Why can they suddenly start winning but HC can't?  Same neighborhoods and kids.
