I don't really keep up with basketball, but I remember seeing the Shaw and Kennedy teams get to the finals just to come up short. Can Picayune finally get that elusive state basketball title? It is going to be a great game. I will be totally honest and I am not looking thru purple and gold glasses when I say this. Hattiesburg basketball team is really really good. If the opposing team is not in shape HHS will literally run you in the ground. They can full court press you the entire game and sub players in 5 at a time and really not miss a beat. The second 5 is not as strong scoring as the first 5 but when they are getting steals and layups on the other end it does not matter. HHS played Picayune in early November and beat them 54-47. That means nothing now. I will tip my hat to Picayune though, if you can go to Jackson and beat one of the most tradition rich high school programs in the state in front of a crowd where 95% of the fans are against you, you are a very good team. That was also before Picayune got the reinforcements from the football team, so it was a totally different team then. It'll be interesting to see what happens in this rematch from back in November. If not for travel, I would like to see the overall best teams play each other regardless of it being north or south. We all know that there are some games that the north state title game or the south state title game is really the overall title game.
