  1. Yeah that was an Omaha caliber game in Arlington today. Tough way for State to take its first L, but they absolutely looked the part this weekend. Kudos to UCLA, they are very worthy of their number one ranking. Still a huge game on Tuesday at the Pete. We will see if there are any hangover effects for State after the way today played out. But also USM is good enough to win straight up regardless. Big, fun baseball games in early March. Don’t see it very often.
  2. State cruised again today against VA Tech. The potential on this team is pretty obvious so far. Two good starting pitchers and a super deep lineup. We’ll see about the number three starter and the bullpen hasn’t really had many high pressure situations yet. But hard to not be impressed with what you’ve seen from State so far. Two huge games in the next three games, with UCLA tomorrow and a trip to Hattiesburg on Tuesday, where USM has also been on a roll.
  3. There are bad seasons where your teams play hard and just don’t have the horses. And then there are bad seasons where you just don’t have the horses and your effort is also questionable. This is the latter for State.
  4. OM bounced back with a dominant win over Ohio State today. They have their highest profile game of the weekend tomorrow against Coastal Carolina.
  5. Nice win for State over Arizona State. Close game through five innings and then State broke it open on ASU’s bullpen. McPherson looked very good in his start, too. VA Tech on tap tomorrow.
  6. I think if the season ended today State would be the 12 seed and OM would be 16, so there’d have to be some movement from one of them in the standings for there to be a Round 3 this year.
  7. Certainly has been a waste of seven pages of discussion, hasn’t it?
  8. These three teams have looked like wrecking crews so far. State and OM both dominated lesser opponents again. USM is destroying Bama.
  9. State and Ole Miss both sweep and remain undefeated. Admittedly have not watched OM much so far but all indications are their pitching has been strong early on, and you already know about the power in the lineup. State looked better this weekend than last, though obviously the schedule so far has been lackluster. I think the Sunday starter role may be on the verge of changing. Foster has struggled through two starts and it seems like Duke Stone is the obvious choice to get first crack at it. Next Sunday will be interesting given that it’s against the current number one ranked team in the country. OM heads to Houston for tourney ball next weekend, State heads to Arlington.
  10. Huge win for USM. Three regional host spots in Mississippi this year… very much a possibility with these three teams.
  11. Welp didn’t take long for the homers to come lol. State hit four of them today in a run rule win.
  12. State so far not hitting many homers but a ton of doubles. You can tell the approach from McMullan is different than what it was under Gautreau which seemed to be more HR reliant and frankly boom or bust.
  13. State and OM both remain undefeated through six games. USM picked up a nice win over Purdue, huge game for them against Oregon State tomorrow.
  14. Honestly even with all the flaws this team has, they’re about 3-4 very close losses away from the conversation being very different. Let it slip away in the final minute against good New Mexico and SMU teams. Lost a close to game to San Francisco without Hubbard. And then whatever the heck you want to call the abomination that was State vs Ole Miss in the Hump several weeks ago.
  15. State and OM beat Alcorn and JSU by a combined margin of 37-3. Both teams looking good early. State hosts the Delaware Blue Hens this weekend. Ole Miss hosts Missouri State aka the other maroon team with MSU initials. USM headed out to Texas for their big early season tournament, they’ll play Oregon State among others.
  16. Perhaps a lost season for State but a legendary performance by Hubbard. Shout out to KeShawn Murphy for missing an open dunk and taking the L in his return to the Hump. Also shout out to John Cohen for giving Steven Pearl a 5 year contract for some inexplicable reason.
  17. Last night was the first time you saw State’s bats show out this year. They’ve got some serious depth. The Valincius brothers are off to quite a start. One of them threw 5+ shutout innings Saturday, the other is batting 1.000 so far on the season.
  18. Great series in Hattiesburg, USM wins the last two games to take it.
  19. State salvages the season split against OM. Hubbard redeemed maybe his worst career game from the first meeting and was great tonight. Jans improved to 6-2 against Ole Miss and 4-2 against Beard. Still two bad teams whose seasons are probably beyond repair. So a season split is probably about right.
  20. State sweeps Hofstra. Not an overly impressive weekend, but a sweep is a sweep. They’ve got too much offensive talent for the bats to not heat up sooner or later. I think they’ve got a lot of solid options out of the bullpen. And Valincius was great in his start. McPherson was merely ok, but you’ll take what he gave you for the most part. Jury still out on Foster, but no denying his talent. USM evened their series with a rubber game tomorrow. OM has not had much issue with Nevada through two games.
  21. This game is like one of those movie series that somehow gets a sequel even though the first one was terrible. My eyes are still hurting from watching the first go-round in Starkville. Tonight is the sequel that nobody asked for.
  22. UCSB’s ace is one of the best arms in the country, and one of the best arms USM will see all year.
  23. Found it interesting that the only guys to record hits for State were returning players from last year’s team. Makes you feel like all the newbies in the lineup were pretty tight. Which I get it, playing in front of 12K against Hofstra in February is a different deal if you’ve never done it before.
  24. Last year they chased offense at the expense of defense, weren’t great at either, and the end result was they were an identical seed to what they were the year before. I think the biggest issue this year is he whiffed colossally on post players. They thought Qunicy Ballard was going to be a true enforcer and he has been absolutely terrible. And nobody else is good enough to pick up the slack for him. I like JDF but he’s a true freshman still growing, wasn’t expected to contribute as much as he’s had to this year.
  25. No surprise but Chambliss got his injunction and looks like he will be suiting up for OM next year. The NCAA is utterly useless lol. Getting punked in the courtroom over and over again in recent years.
