SCORE THURSDAY Potts Camp 49 at Thrasher 12

Every school now has had a season opener. Some pretty noticeable outcomes are out there. Salem and Ethel have a 2-0 start. Should really get a better chance to see the improvements with the programs this week. Calhoun City is still dominating as they on a path of destruction. It should be interesting to see if and/or how the dominance continue against Winona. Who has been the biggest surprise so far? Who seems to be flying under the radar? Who seems to be the top contender(s)? Week 1 is behind us. It it still season openers for a handful of teams. Some teams were dominant as expected. Some team were surprising. Stringer is looking like they are heading in the right direction. Region 8 might be interesting to see how they finish. It’s too early to call it but Region 5 and Region 8 might be the two most competitive regions in 1 A this year. Which 1A teams impressed you? Which 1A teams disappointed you? Which 1a team looks like there is potential for a turn around? Which matchup are you looking forward to seeing this week? Bolivar County went from 7 to 3 Current districts (North Bolivar, West Bolivar and Cleveland) as you suggested. It really should just be 2 districts, which is Cleveland and a Bolivar County district for the rest of the county. School wise it really needs 1 county high school in this county somewhere probably just west of Cleveland. If placed under one school Bolivar county would be a high 6A or low 7A school.
-
Bolivar County and Washington County. They are Long Overdue for district consolidations at minimum. Should really be 1-2 districts in the county. I know the communities are proud for their histories, but declining populations are a good reason to.

We are a few weeks away from officially kicking off the 2025 football season. The athletes have been working hard to make memorable moments, as well as trying to claim a championship in December. I do hope for a clean, safe, exciting season for all teams. This season is definitely one with new territories to explore. Coming from 2A is Calhoun City who have seem to be the heavy favorites in the north and overall with everybody else gunning to make a statement and to show others they should not be overlooking them. The south is looking more interesting with Simmons, Lumberton, Nanih Waiya, and Taylorsville as near equal favorites. Who will be a surprise team(s) flying under the radar. Out of state vs instate matchups, private vs public matchups, cross region matchups, higher classification matchups. Who will pull off the upset? Which games are interesting matchups to watch? I think the game of the week is probably the Vardaman at Nanih Waiya game. Games Amanda Elzy at Leflore County Ashland at Smithville Biggersville at West Lowndes Byhalia at H. W. They definitely had some speedsters from what I saw. Just was like Next in line and next man up. I certainly didnt think they would have had that coming back.

Charleston also beat Amanda Elzy but I can not recall the score.

Not a true comparison to make. Only The Delta in 1A only been south for about 3-4 years now. Before the Delta went south the last few north state representatives and top north half teams came out the Delta. But the Delta does need to do better outside of Simmons in making deep playoffs run. Simmons has been the only school that hasnt really had a consistent dropoff in talent type since changing over to South 1A.
-
Should be interesting. This might be one year where there are no clear cut favorites. I think BIggersville, Calhoun City, Vardaman, Leflore County, West Tallahatchie should all be good out of the north. If so that will make for some great matchups after round 1.

Shaw has a very talented 8th grade group that won its middle school conference and championship mostly in dominating fashion . 1 close contest with Northside in a seasonal matchup. Those soon to be 9th graders will likely get a good amount of exposure this upcoming year and will likely be a problem a few years for now. As for this year, they probably will look similar as they have for the past couple of years. Not too many seniors so the returning players will have some growth.
-
Where can some good spring matchups be found for the 1A teams at?
-
For some reason Hwy 82 seems to be that dividing line in 1A for the past recent years as far as north and south schools. A few teams tend to be moved north based off where they have created the region 2 in a 4 region class, or where they have created region 4 in a 8 region class. Its has always been do they pull from the Delta area, the GTA area, or the north central MS area. It looks like this year they chose the north central MS area and then just grabbed two from the Delta area.

There are just too many 1A school that are in northeast Mississippi that just dont play football and are not pushed to play football. Most of them have the student body to field a team. If schools like mcadams, dexter (when opened), ray brooks (when opened) who are and had been among the smallest of the 1A fielded football teams, then the rest honestly could too. Obviously there are things such as having a place to play and insurances among the kids to consider. However northeast MS school communitites does tends to support their schools well in the sports they do play.
-
West Tally and Leflore County out the delta will also represent 1A north this year while the rest of the Delta is south.
-
Baldwyn, Velma Jackson, East Marion, Sacred Heart, Enterprise-Lincoln, Leland, and Myrtle are heading to 2A. Riverside, Ingomar, Leflore County, West Lincoln, Bogue Chitto, Calhoun City, Richton, and Sebastopol are coming to 1A for the next two years. The MHSAA has decided to keep the 8 regions instead of 4. This year the teams in each regions are different for all sports. Ingomar does not play football and the state champs are once again heading back up to 2A. Who do you see in your top 5, top 10 or top contenders for next year?
-
Finally the week every teams wish to play for every year. Two north Mississippi teams will take a 3+ hours trip to Hattiesburg to play for it all. Baldwyn represents the north and Hollandale-Simmons represents the south. Two teams who are no strangers in either being in the mix or playing for a title. This is Baldwyn first trip with 2008. This is Simmons first trip since 2021. Who do you think will win and by what margins?

Congrats to the final four teams for advancing this far. With a trip to Hattiesburg on the line, I can imagine this upcoming Friday will be anything but easy despite it looking easy on paper. Baldwyn? West Lowndes? Simmons? Velma Jackson? Who will be your 1A State Champions? North Half West Lowndes at Baldwyn South Half Simmons at Velma Jackson
