s1nglewing
Last season of significant success: Callaway - 2013 Forest Hill – never (pre-playoffs their last best season was 1968) Jim Hill – 2002 Lanier - 1986 Murrah – never (pre-playoffs 1973) Provine – 2004 Wingfield – never (1968) That 2004 Provine team had had ten shutouts and surrendered only 23 points the entire season, with 16 of the 23 scored in the last game when they lost to Oxford 16-13. Jim Hill's only ever good season (2002, 9-2) ended with a 1st round playoff loss.

MSSportsGuy
JPS has struggled for many years for a multitude of reasons. Football success just isn't a priority for schools and they lack the resources, coaching, support, and generally speaking athletes to win against peer schools based on their enrollments. There are 7 high schools in Jackson and with the continual shrinking of the city and decline, there should be no more than 4 and at most 5. longhorn75
This is not a surprise, looking at how much the per capita income of most JPS student families is. Unfortunately these inner city schools don't have the money to substantiate for frills such as athletics, when they can barely fund a passable education. MadisonReb10
Provine was always good to decent in the late 90s and early to mid 2000’s. Callaway more recently but they’ve also had the D1 talent. Murrah couldn’t even muster more than one winning record and a 1st round playoff loss with Malik Dear, who I will say is the most talented player in JPS from the last 20 years. Ahead of Antoine Taylor, all of the Callaway guys, etc. Quinton Culberson is the only one who comes close talent wise since 2000 in JPS. MadisonReb10
Will also add that there are a ton of hoops guys in the hallway who won’t give football a shot, but that’s JPS. Seems like Lanier, Forest Hill, Murrah, Callaway, Provine, and Jim Hill have all won a title in women or mens hoops multiple times in the last 15 years. Wingfield being the odd one out recently but used to be great way back when. Add in Raymond who is not JPS but still under the Hinds County schools and the basketball is even better. MSSportsGuy
Basketball is king of JPS for sure and their teams have been successful and produced considerable D1 talent. Football is just so much more expensive to operate and requires a commitment from the school and community. JPS just doesn't have the financial resources or community interest overall to put into football. That isn't going to change. I wonder how long JPS will continue to operate 7 high schools with declining enrollments and crumbling infrastructure. Several neighborhood elementary schools have closed and more are likely on the way. Eventually that will trickle up to the high school level. Rebel Bert
South of I-20: Wingfield and Forest Hill would become 7A North I-20: Jim Hill and Provine would be 7A Woodrow Wilson/UMMC: Murrah 6A North Jackson: Lanier and Callaway would be 6A/7A It might not work unless you have 4 schools 10-12 grades, 3 schools 7-9 grades and close some of the old schools and consolidate 4-6, and K-3. 3 of those bottom 7A schools previously listed will drop to 6A. Mixing those up together would be disastrous. There are many local gangs in Jackson, not just Vice Lords, SCR, and Gangster Disciples. But those who are operating the schools are well aware of what consolidation would cause in terms of violence.
Rebel Bert
Like he said above there should only be 4 or 5 schools in Jackson. There is no school located east of 55 but JA. So you will have to do something similar as I posted above. Forest Hill in SW Jackson Wingfield in SE Jackson tho a percentage of those kids go to Byram and Terry. Jim Hill in Central Jackson North of 80. Provine is NE of Jim Hill closer to downtown Murrah is at the University Lanier is in West Jackson West of the University Callaway is in North Central Jackson West of State Street. Those folks will show nought fight gangly before you close their high school.

I just don't see how it's feasible to continue to operate 7 within a city that is falling apart and the population keeps dropping. The two most logical to close would be Lanier and Wingfield, which have the smallest enrollments. Lanier was an all minority high school during segregation and has a lot of meaning within the community. But Lanier could be divided among Callaway, Murrah, and Provine without those schools increasing their capacity at all. Winfield could also see some at Jim Hill and some at Forest Hill. Not saying it will happen and I get the resistance but at some point it has to be examined. The number of elementary and middle schools has dropped as some with low enrollments are simply too costly to repair. That's what will ultimately get many smaller community across the state as well to consolidate, which is overdue in several areas.
