Kabe Barnett, Oak Grove QB

I may be wrong but to my knowledge Kabe Barnett has no football offers after guiding OG to a 13-0 season and an outstanding game to win the 6A championship.  The last two plays of that game alone warrants some attention. First year starter and handles pressure like a seasoned veteran. Real impressive.

I expect some to come in his senior year if he continues to develop as much as he did last year but this guy had potential to be really good for someone at the next level.

He is very dynamic and I also expect him to receive good offers eventually.

He will definitely get some lower level D1 offers from C-USA or sunbelt schools, but I dont see any SEC offers coming to him

Eh.... he actually did much better as a first year starter than I expected. And probably could have easily thrown for 3K if it wasn’t for a few blowouts. He has some mechanics to tighten up on but his athletic ability and decision making is exceptional. I’ve seen worse QBs get D1 offers. We’ll see how his senior year plays out.

Yea I just looked up his stats and that kid only threw for 2,400 yards and 36 TDs as a junior. He only ran for 440 yards and 8 TDs. Those are rookie numbers. I would be surprised if Jones even offers him.

That’s pretty decent stats for a high school QB in Mississippi. Majority of high school QB don’t manage to get past 2000 passing yards in a season.  To get past 2500 that means a team is more than likely slinging the ball around a lot.  Take into account that this is still high school which means receivers aren’t sure handed just yet.

Kabe Barnett is a great player and definitely deserves a shot to play somewhere at the next level and if he continues to make plays he will get that opportunity. It does however bother me that "we" collectively as a society/fans get so hung up over OFFERS that a player may or may not possess. We almost act like that if a player gets or has offers he becomes magically a better football player than he was the day before. We tell kids not to get "caught up on having offers" and enjoy the game but, then thats all we talk about or care about. High School football should be played because it is fun, the kids love the game, the kids love their school, the kids love their community, and because they get to be a part of something that is bigger than themselves, but i strongly believe that a lot of players are just playing high school football now for offers and attention. The successful teams in our state are the teams that get their players to understand this and buy in to the team and not to themselves as Kabe has done. If it was about offers/talent then Starkville would have won 6A the last 3 seasons and Holmes County Central would have won 5A the last 3 seasons, but instead you see school like Oxford, Oak Grove, and West Point dominate (West Point gets to the championship every year with a bunch of unoffered kids that go to JUCOs every year because their coaching staff gets them to buy in as a team and those kids have a lot of pride in their community. South Panola used to be this way until they jumped on the "offer" train with the rest of us).

Myself included! Sorry thats my rant for the day. Have a blessed day!

It's the same in basketball.  Everyone wants to be recruited.  It's the byproduct of Social Media.  If you aren't posting highlights and getting offers you aren't any good OR you aren't perceived as being any good.  So, any loser that can dunk or make a layup posts a video.  Any one that catches a pass and looks cool in a helmet and shorts can run routes and catch a ball to snazzy music.  It's all a sham and the kids are getting sold lies.

But the kid can play and should get an opportunity to play somewhere after high school.  Hopefully he is focusing on that and not the dog and pony show that is social media.

Uhhhh.... I get your point and I somewhat agree on some parts of it. I personally don’t get caught up in college recruiting for whatever team I support unless the kid signs the dotted line. And I do think that this social media era has played a big part in the circus that is recruiting these days. But to your point....kids don’t enjoy high school sports any less just because they want offers. You can see that on the field. If anything social media has created platforms for kids that wouldn’t normally get looks to catch the right schools eye. It gives them an added incentive to perform even better on the field and in the class room. Now for the ones that don’t qualify academically.. that’s on them and their support system, and often times the actual school district they’re in. But a scholarship isn’t all about an opportunity to play on the next level it’s also a chance at a free education. Point being... you can still enjoy whatever sport you love and still make goals for yourself.
