He claimed there should be no confusion and then gave a very confusing explanation of the rule. I assume it’s something to do with high school coaches coaching travel/AAU ball.

He said only 3 7th graders can play up in basketball. And I am like no way 3 athletes equals 60%. It has to equal 40% and I am like:

3=60% or 1.5 x 2 =30% or never mind that leavesjust 5 players = 100%. 1.5 x 2 equaling 40% only gives me 1.5 x 5 = 7.5 athletes. I don't understand the reason 3 can move up. The math doesn't work because I remember having like 15 players back in the day and when region tournaments began only 12 were allowed to dress out.

I went back and listen to the podcast again. He says there seems to be some confusion on the 60% rule. He states it includes 7th thru 12th grades. He says during the summer you can can keep your team together during workouts. Once school starts only 3. I have no clue unless one of the following: Only 3 can play up a grade such as 3 7th graders can play play 8th grade basketball. Or the players have to be separated into 3 groups during practice.  Etc, etc.

Im guessing they are trying to help out the middle school and JV teams? I know there are cases of a JV team not being able to play due to players being needed for Friday nights, but that only seems to play into the smaller schools

This rule has been in place for a long time.  If you are coaching out of season, AAU, Fall Baseball, 7 on 7 Travel Team, etc., during the school year, NOT IN THE SUMMER, your team may not be made up of more than 60% of players from your school.  This has been the rule for as long as I can remember.

3 would equal 60% of starting 5 on basketball  the other 2 from some other school.

Here's the actual rule that the director was attempting to explain:

During the school’s sports seasons (schools sports seasons begin with the opening date of football practice and ends with the completion of state baseball championships) an independent team (i.e.: club team, recreational team, select team, elite team, all-star team) can be made up of no more than: 7 football players, 4 volleyball players, 3 basketball players, 7 soccer, 5 fast pitch softball players, 5 baseball players, or 4 players 7 on7 teams.

That is directly out of his own MHSAA Handbook. To note: 1) If you do the math it's really not the "60%" rule. Football/Soccer 63.6%, Soccer and baseball 55.5% based on calculating it no more than x number of a starting number on field for that sport. It's not really worded properly in the handbook as it should say those values can't be from the same school team. It used to say "starters" but then independent coaches loop-holed their way around the "starting" phrase
