Half the Distance

Now that all the serious stuff is over with: this is a pet peeve of mine. It has been this way forever but WHY do we have half the distance penalties? It is absurd. Makes as much sense as a murder charge based on the age of the victim.  Did you kill them or not? That's all I need to know.

Yes I understand you cannot mark off a 15 yard penalty from the 14 yard line. But you can damn sure put it at the 1. I see no reason for a team to get off easy just because their defense committed desperation penalties to try and keep you from scoring down on their end. Penalize those cheaters.

I say mark it off, if you can't,  put it at the 1. At the 1 I am open to suggestions.

Besides, it's too painful watching the officials in a huddle using their fingers and toes to figure out  what 1/2 is and still getting it wrong.

They should just make it like the spot foul like the Saints had yesterday on the pass interference penalty.  Place the ball where the infraction occurred, and if the infraction occurred in the endzone, then place the ball at the one foot yard line.

If you are going to have half the distance penalties inside the 15 yard line then they should be assessed equally.

In other words, if you are at the one yard on offense and the defense is offsides, the penalty is half the distance to the half yard line.

Since that is the case, if the offense incurs a penalty, it should be half distance away from the goal. An illegal procedure would move the ball back a half yard.

Then at least you are assessing the penalties equal both ways when the ball is close to the goal line.

after the play, any receiver making the motion to throw a penalty

stop all that crying, play football

I was telling somebody this exact thing just this past week. Let the refs handle it. All the "throw the flag motions" from players is poor sportsmanship.

Really only one rule that I dont like in high school is when the defense jumps offside its blown dead immediately. I would like to see the offense get a free play out of it. And make pass interference or defensive holding an automatic first down.

Biggest impact from the offsides resulting in blowing play dead is on FG or Extra points.    Cost Petal a state title about 10 years ago.

That is what I always keep explaining still to this the to the people who say the refs cheated Petal. The refs didnt cheat petal. The rule cheated Petal. Even after the game the Petal coach said the officials got the call right.

I agree it was ruled correctly.   It is actually an advantage for the defense in certain situations especially at the end of each half.

As bad as high school refs are, this would never work
