I guess there is no perfect way to do this but taking home the gold ball should out weigh most metrics. I don't think there is big problem with #1. Some of the teams are benefiting from being larger schools and finishing in the top 25. I don't think that dominate is the appropriate word. Maybe the top 20 program s and that would open the discussion for programs like West Jones, Hattiesburg, Wayne County and Ocean Springs just to name a few from the south part of the state.

Its highly likely that they will fill that date with a lower classification opponent. My sources tell me that Picayune reached out to Oak Grove and it was decided that it would be a brutal game and both teams pre district games are not cupcakes. I think the new coach was put in a bad situation.

This decision will have bad consequences for other sports as well. This is really a CS move not only being homecoming its also was the biggest gate of the year along with the other sports. Really big . This leaves Maroon Tide with only 4 home games. At least Poplarville canceled early on to allow Picayune to make other arrangements. This is sad.

I can tell you as a Picayune Maroon Tide fan having battled West Jones many times over the last 20 years or so that they have had the talent level that consistently equals Laurel, Hattiesburg, Wayne County and Picayune. Of course some teams go on bad stretches. Look at Pascagoula and they have had the talent and have struggled for some reason. Several years ago Lewis Sims was considered an elite coach but some have turned on him. West Jones have consistently been there.

Probably the smartest thing they could have done was get someone out of the area and get new blood. New coach seems to have the pedigree but you still need the Jessie's and Joe's. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

Probably a little bit before your time but thru the late '70s to the mid '80s the Picayune Maroon Tide had 3 QBs go play at D1 schools Danny Jackson started 4 years for the Nasty Bunch at USM when they had really good teams. Bobby Junkin lettered 4 times and started 3 years at Mississippi State. Bobby Bounds won a state championship in '86 and went on and started 4 years at East Texas State. That being said Jackson and Junkin played DB and Bounds set many records at ETSU at QB.

As it should be. West Jones has a great talent pool to pull from. Even though Pierson is one of the top coaches in the state it could be argued that he should have won a couple more state championships. Just saying.

West Jones vs Wayne County use to be good. Laurel vs. Wayne County Laurel vs. West Jones were good games. Picayune and Moss Point used to be some classics.

West Jones and Hattiesburg should be ranked closer to the top 6A imho.

Its true. First 5 games will be tough going but should make ready for the ultimate goal.

I would be on the phone to Germantown. Russell Mitchell would be perfect for Ocean Springs. He would win and win consistently.
