1927 Big 8 Champ Biloxi lost in the State Championship game to Philadelphia. After that Big 8 Champs declined further participation in the state championship playoffs for fear of being embarrassed again. Although some Big 8 teams did participate in the playoffs, none won. After Jackson St. Joe defeated Murrah in the 1972 Capitol Bowl, Big 8 Conference schools refused to play non-Big 8 schools in bowls. This past season clearly showed that the size of the school does not dictate which football team is the best.

State Championships. Not bowl games. The initial championship series was discontinued after an enormous fight that occurred pitting teams and spectators against each other in 1930. The 1948 & 49 playoffs even had teams classified as AA, A, BB, & B based on school enrollment exactly like 1981 when the playoff format resumed. The 48/49 championship series was discontinued because the Big 8 schools, which comprised the AA classification, refused to participate.

Mississippi had actual playoffs and actual state champions from 1923 - 1930 and again in 1948 & 49... and 1981 to present as well.
