Underachieving Programs

Ones that come to mind:

Gulfport-lots of old tradition there, don’t know the reasons for the fall off over the years

Tupelo- largest school in the state, don’t know reasons there either, they were really good back in the days of Booty Sloan

just 2 off top of my head that I would think would have the resources to win

Not so sure I agree with New Albany from the sheer fact of they don’t usually have the talent as other 4A programs.  Maybe in 2020, had a big OL and big LBers.  But ran into Louisville in 2nd round.

They don't have talent to beat North Pontotoc or South Pontotoc or Ripley or Houston on Pontotoc or Itawamba ? I watched the Louisville game from 2020 several times and the talent was fairly close.  What other issues could be in play there?                                     Shannon fared pretty well when Chad Cook roamed the sidelines there and he had a good staff as well.

2020 New Albany had some talent.  This year, they weren’t close to the others.  NA was very small especially when the RB went out.
I also disagree about Shannon with Cook, yes they won more than Carter but never won enough for the amount of talent on the field.

I think in a lot of schools these days admins are just happy to have yes men and don’t really care about sports until they get push back from community.

Haven’t known many coaches that won, that were Yes Men. A lot of them could be a little strong headed!

I agree on the Tupelo stuff.  One that we feel usually underachieves is New Albany in 4A.  They come out every August running the mouth and usually flounder and are flat when the game gets tight.

New Albany is definitely overrated. Has vastly underachieved especially when you look at programs like IAHS and Caledonia. Both programs have made it to north half recently where as new Albany struggles to get out of the first round.

That is sure the general thought from the folks in their region. It seems when talent is equal they lose. On paper when looking at the size of the school and tax base of the city they should contend for a division title annually.  They appear to be all in on volleyball, golf and eat up with tennis at New Albany.
