You’re talking about and all time great defense in state history in an era where offensive football usually dominates. I’m not so sure. Piersons offense was pass first and pass to set up the run. He would have forced the 9th grade qb to throw the ball 50-60% of the time. Even when it was obviously not working. There have been past Wj teams that could run better than stats showed because of this. They would have games where they run several plays in row for 40-50 yards moving down field then drive stalls by 3 incomplete passes. Last years playoff loss to picayune was prime example. Merlin Posted December 2, 2023 Share Posted December 2, 2023 (edited) Next year will be big test for Reynolds as west has to replace all but 1 or 2 starters on defense and 3 o line. Now they got some massive 10th graders that need some weight room work that likely end up on o line so there will not be a size drop off but will be experience drop off. The defense no way you cut it will not be as good and maybe “average” would be a hope at this point. There are no signs of tall wr’s as seemingly every kid over 6’1 is over 250 lbs. Some of the young big kids will likely move to d line. So next year will be a huge test of Reynolds ability to start to place his own pieces. But WJ wow this is the best defense I have seen in a few year. Their offense has peaked at the right time. The scary part is a freshman QB, a Jr power back and a sophomore scat back. Their offensive and defensive lines look like college lines lol. My pick WJ 5A Laurel vs WP well WP is WP they are going to do what they do. They will run the ball down your throat. Laurel they have some athletes and they are big. They have some speed in the backfield and outside. The QB IMO is playing out of position I’m not sure if they had an injury or he’s all they have. They had a lot of turnovers in our game. My pick is WP 4A Columbia vs Louisville wow I believe this is the game of the championship weekend. Columbia is really a good team if you haven’t watched them you will be surprised. They are very well coached and don’t beat their self. Louisville on the other hand lol they are Louisville fast and physical man. I know I said WJ was the best defense but this one is not bad. My pick Louisville 3A Noxubee vs Winona another great matchup both teams have outstanding QBs Noxubee they are battle tested. Their skilled players are very good. Winona another one of those smash mouth physical teams. Both teams are going to hit you in the mouth not for the faint of heart lol. My pick Winona 2A Heidelberg vs Charleston.. First year HC Daryl Carter has got his team to buy in. The past two weeks they have defeated Bay Springs and Raleigh behind a Freshman QB I believe. Protecting the ball is key for the oilers. Charleston is no stranger to Championship game but it hasn’t always been good to them. This team is a little different I believe they are on a mission to get the jinx off of them and have the talent to do so. My pick Charleston 1A Biggersville vs Velma Jackson two really good teams with athletes galore. Velma Jackson is making their first championship game in football so they can’t come in nervous. They fell behind early against Taylorsville last week before barn storming back. If they fall behind this week I don’t see that come back. Biggersville this will be the best team Velma has played . They better matchup and avoid the big play. My pick Velma Jackson Well I have to settle for 6-1. Velma Jackson let me down in to me what turned out to be the best game.
