greenandgoldhawk
How would you think Greenville would fair in both MHSAA and MAIS if there were just 1 public school and 1 private school there? There are currently 3 private schools and 2 public schools serving that immediate area with 2 more public schools within 5-7 miles 1 going south and 1 going east. Both GCS and Greenville St Joe have produced championships and Washington is having a unprecedented quiet 9-1 season so far. Would a merger into 1 school public and 1 school private help Greenville schools overall or would the private school only?
Rebel Bert
You have Greenville Public School District and Washington County Public Schools. Merge into one District could be an option. As far as closing Riverside and O'Bannon I don't know if it will improve academics or athletics. The private schools are probably taking players from Greenville. St Joe gets a percentage of Catholics from Arkansas or at least at one time they were. Closing some might help. We all know that Greenville high, Washington, and St Joe won't close. I was in Lake Village yesterday and there were multiple St. Joe billboards throughout the city.

They went to the MAIS along with Natchez Cathedral because of some 1A northeast schools was losing to them in sports like baseball and the MHSAA told them that they could not use the Arkansas nor Louisiana players if they stayed in the MHSAA.

MSSportsGuy
The same argument could be made in several towns in our state. Places that really don't have high quality public schools usually have a private school or one or more county schools that are around, but some even have another private school that didn't start of for the same reasons as the older ones from 1970ish. My kids graduated from public schools in Rankin County and we were overall pleased with their experience academically and athletically. Rankin County now has 5 private schools that have siphoned off students from the public system here and in some cases students from surrounding counties. I am not anti private school at all but believe public is a better option in an area like mine. Too many communities in the state are losing population yet desire to keep the same educational infrastructure (schools, districts, etc) as when there were significantly more students in the area. Greenville would probably be better served with one public and one private school but we are probably still 20+ years from that being a reality. One need only look at the pushback the JPS Superintendent has received when proposing closing 16 schools that are partially full and need signficant maintenance.
