Vancleave football

I don't pretend to know so much about Vancleave football, however, there's only so many athletes to go around and Fant is probably stacking the offense with them in the hope of winning shootouts.  Honestly, though, I don't think Fant has the intangibles necessary to be a great, maybe even good head coach.  He has an arrogance about him and possibly doesn't relate well to the players.  He's a very good offensive game-planner but ... face of a football program -- I don't know.

In the playoff era, you've had thirteen coaches and only Don Hinton has had sustained success.  Bloomfield's teams were competitive but he finished with an overall losing record.  Perhaps expectations should be tempered when you're averaging a new head coach every three years since the early 80s.

BTW, who is the defensive coordinator?

I agree that Vancleave is trigger happy with hiring coach’s , They seem to wanna hire the first pretty face . It’s a shame they’re were several good names in the hat when Fant was hired . There seems to be some pretty good talent in Vancleave right now I believe with right motivation and path they may be able to make some noise . The current staff definitely isn’t motivated to lead it seams as if the offense is shooting from the hip the whole game . Defense has holes and cut back lanes everywhere and definitely open to the big play .

Couple bright spots on the field last night for Vancleave . 22 Peterson kid is only a jr I think he’s gonna be a force next season. 2 Parker sophomore first start from what I hear .. I didn’t think he did to bad . Only game I’ve seen but the lack of execution on offense forces creativity that was used way to late in the game . 10 in the box and Fant ran Iso ?  Vancleave took away the flats and out routes but never adjusted to stop the curls or the Qb . Coaches seem like they just winged it last night . Vancleave past was always the team that would hammer folks and play smart football . Not the case anymore getting pushed around and burning timeouts in the first qtr on 4th down because they didn’t jump .

Casey Gilbert is the DC, he came from Goula and up north somewhere before that, don't know if he has ever been a DC before.

Gilbert at best may be a good position’s coach. But he spent two stints as an OC in Goula and they were both terrible. Sisson tried him his last year and with Senquez Golson the offense was pathetic. Sims tried him again after Fant left and again terrible.

I agree.  He did have success coaching the defensive line after Sims moved him there in 2011.

Well we give up about 40 a game, really it's not good, offensively we have only one weapon and the kid is running the ball 25 plus times a game, Peterson is going to be a good ball player, sorry already is, maybe the best overall kid on the team, ran the ball more the past couple of games, we moved in a new QB last week and he got knocked out of the game on 2 occasions, we really need to make some changes in the staff, but I don't think our AD will do that, I don't know if he has the **** to do it......

Gilbert was an asst. at Cleveland East Side before going to Pascagoula, then Moss Point, then back to Pascagoula.

Gilbert was at Cleveland High under Greg Robinson, not Cleveland East Side. Not sure what his role was, possibly OC and OL. I know Robinson is the DC at Brandon and has been for many years so I assume he was the calling the defense at Cleveland before he left.

well last week we played PRC and won.  but they are like1-7, so we didn't really impress anyone, never stopped them on defense, they turned the ball over 3-4 times or it would have been a shoot-out.

We are in 5A this year, really needed to be in 4A again, had we been could probably have finished top 4.

IDK guys its really bad, numbers are down, kids not playing......

I think Vancleave will be fine going forward. I know their 9th and 10th grade groups are really solid and I hear the 8th grade group is good. Dogs were in for a down year from what I gathered anyway. Losing some OL/DL and their QB from last year. Bilbo was the only thing really coming back. Obviously being in a tough 5A region compared to the cupcake that is coast 4A is a little different. What are enrollment numbers going to be next reclassification? I have been told that both Vancleave and East Central are steadily going to continue to grow. I got to watch their last two freshmen teams and I was impressed with how they played and looked. Better days are coming.

The ninth grade team had a good year, I think they lost 1--2 games, it is a good group, but the sophomore class does not have much talent. I think the JV team this year got hammered every game they played.  8th grade, ah....so, so..... It will be another bad year next season and hopefully 2 years from now we can be competitive.....numbers are about the same as before, not much change, not many people moving into this area, as for EC yes it is growing, most people moving into shipyard or Chevron want to live north of Pascagoula. It would be beneficial for all sports if we could go back to 4A...............and make some changes in the staff(s).....

Well another disappointing season comes to an end.  We finished the year 4-7, The Fant era should come to an end, 12-19 over 3 years, last year we were 5-6, so no improvement in the program in 3 years. Yes at times we looked ok on offense, but once again the defense was bad, all season, had chances to beat EC, but no defense, gave up 42 points. The fact is we have had a couple of athletic groups the last 2 seasons, it is just not showing up consistently on Friday nights.....IDK the answers, if I did I would express them, but if we do not become a better balanced team on both sides of the ball, next season will not end any better.....We had one of the better backs in the division, their were 3-4 pretty good backs, and Gautier has the QB who is so-so........next season who knows what we will do on offense.

Vancleave has been, and most likely always will be a program that competes but usually does not have the athletes to truly be contenders. If Fant leaves or is run off, who do they expect to get? Vancleave is not a community swimming with talent and athletes. I think Fant is the right guy for the job, but they are going through a little bit of a dip when it comes to talent (especially on defense). Seeing them the little I have this year, other than Bilbo, there is not a player on their roster that I would say is college ball player. Obviously moving to 5A has been a struggle for them as well.
