Exactly this. The large number of kids in struggling schools won’t have access (via transportation) to other schools. Speaker White knows this and didn’t provide for it in his HB2. That’s why he has no income cap in this bill. He knows only those who can take their kids other place (those already doing so) will be able to access these funds he wants to allocate. This bill is not about school choice.

The whole of HB2 wasn’t written for the kids who are struggling (or else it would also include mechanisms to transport those troubled kids from failing schools to other schools who the state would force to take them & it would allow space for all school aged children in low income families - but the bill does none of that). Do we truly think the voucher process will be simple and easy enough for many in our most vulnerable population to figure out and access on behalf of their children? I doubt it. Government does not tend to make processes ‘easy’ on the overall. HB2 was written for Speaker White and his buddies to get $ for their own kids private school education. There’s no uppermost income limit for receipt of funds. That’s on purpose. If this passes (REALLY hope it doesn’t), I’ll go out on a limb and predict that by percentage, the whole of those 12,500 available voucher spots won’t go to the most income-depressed areas in our state. They’ll overwhelmingly go to areas in our state where there are good public available already & parents just want the $ to reimburse themselves for the tuition they’re already paying (from the coast to around Pinebelt and then the Jackson area, if I had to venture a guess).

I simply reject your implication that all public schools only teach to test & thereby suck and that all private schools reject teaching to test and thereby appropriately prepare students for what comes next. Neither statement is 100% true. Surely you know that. Let’s not play this game.

HONEST ANSWER: Firstly, if a public school has issues, we need to fix the issues - not just use ineffective bandaids called HB2 that don’t help ALL the students in that school and don’t fix the root problem. Secondly, we all pay taxes for all kinds of public services. We may choose to opt out of some of those programs and never use others. That’s part of being a citizen & responsible member of the community. And those are your choices - like choosing homeschool or private school. Strong communities benefit us all. (THAT is the “good” you question.) Lastly, if your argument is that you should get to choose where your tax dollars go or get money back for public services you don’t use, you’re opening a WIDE door there - not just for retirees and all others who have no children utilizing public education… but also for those who don’t use Medicare, don’t regularly access public roads and highways, aren’t on WIC, SNAP & all types of other assistance programs. The list is long.

Definitely. Speaker Jason White authored the bill for himself and his buddies to get $$ reimbursed on the private school tuition they’re already paying. VOTE. HIM. OUT. It’s not a democrat vs republican issue. -If it was truly about choice, then it would apply to all students, regardless. -If it was only about getting students out of failing (D or F rated) schools, then it would not allow for those with salaries into the 6 digits to get $$ for private school tuition. -If this was only about education, other issues (i.e. Tim Tebow act = which is about athletics) wouldn’t be attached to it. Don’t buy the lie, y’all. Tell your legislators to vote NO!!

Interesting part is that however many of the 12,500 spots they have left after granting vouchers to the “impoverished” percentage who apply will go to anyone else who applies. As with a lot of social programs, those who truly need it and qualify for it don’t know when to apply or ‘how’ to apply… and so they don’t get the help they need (and deserve) and the funds they should be getting are diverted to others who really don’t need them…. which will be the case with those trying to attend the Jackson area MAIS schools…. where vouchers won’t even cover 50% of the total cost to attend. The whole thing is a mess. Because this bill tries to circumvent fixing the issue with struggling schools and just put temporary bandaids on the symptoms

Cannot categorically make the statement that student experiences or discipline is better in private schools. Could’ve been your experience, and that’s valid. But stating it as fact for everyone and every school is not factually accurate - which is why I referenced my personal experience instead of making a generalization of all private schools.

What ppl are missing here is that the portability of funds doesn’t mean 100% tuition payment. There’s a limit, and it won’t cover all of private tuition at most reputable private schools in MS. Especially the ones around Jackson. I went to private school once upon a time for many years. Then ultimately graduated from a public high school. Loved public. Hated private. Would 100% send kids now to the same public high school I graduated from. Would not send to the private school I went to - and it’s got a larger enrollment now than it did back then. Didn’t like the vibes. Still don’t. Don’t think private schools should even have the option to be MHSAA schools. And that’s a whole different issue

Both won’t drop down unless someone else moves up. Either both will stay up or one will go down. There will be 24 teams in 7A regardless. If both Pearl and Murrah drop then who moves up?

Interestingly enough, the distance between OG (in Lamar County) and PCS (in Forrest County) is roughly 7.5 miles (20 mins through the heart of Hattiesburg), while the distance from OG to Columbia Academy (Marion County) is roughly 23 miles straight up the highway, and 25 mins travel time. So we’re talking a max difference of 5 mins. And based on the geography of OG’s school district, there are homes within the OG ‘boundary’ that would be equidistant between PCS and Columbia. So I can’t see why anyone would forbid a transfer to CA but allow one to PCS especially when CA tuition is $5,831/annually and PCS is $9,660. That’s a massive difference.

You think Pearl would shift North before NWR? On a map, Northwest Rankin is more North than Brandon and Pearl … although I think they’d pitch a fit if MHSAA tried to make them a North state team. But it’s pretty clear geographically which school is more North

I don’t think having a dad at USM is a huge feather in your cap at the moment. But again - you do you, dude. I stand by my opinion. And btw - I never said “less” risk. Risk is risk - physically and otherwise. You cannot predict injury, coaching changes, etc.

There’s a difference between Ark State and LSU. Several high schools turn out D1 while others produce SEC. Those are 2 very different things.

More risk? Not really. Football is football. Injuries are gonna happen if you’re playing ball. Regardless the classification. If a kid wants to be seen to gain legit college offers, he’s gonna have to play at a school where he can shine. That’s the same all over. Compare the offers at PCS to the offers at OG. Any implication that offers and interest are the same At both places is comical. Everyone knows that’s not true.

Kids move all the time to be seen at a larger school with more visibility so they can get college offers. That doesn’t equal recruiting

I’m really listening to you here - but totally lost. Need a name of the starter OG “took” from PCS. I can’t find one in any sport. But I do know of one starter in basketball (male - Class of 2025) PCS took from OG when he was a junior. They recruited him well & he was successful at PCS.

I can only think of 1 kid in the last 2-3 years who was a starter and left a school about 30 mins away (Columbia 5A) to attend OG. Family moved, so it’s legit. But to say that OG “recruits like crazy” is unproven… unless there are tons of kids transferring to OG just to sit the bench and so we never hear of them because they’re not playing … which seems unlikely. Local kids don’t transfer just to ride the pine. So unless you got names to attach to the speculation, you’re just blowing hot air.

I get the point you’re trying to make - but as I remember Plumlee wasn’t nearly as tall as Morgan appears to be. JRP was scrappy as all get out & could scramble like crazy. He was a fun high school athlete to watch - which Morgan definitely is. And they both were capable of playing both ways & did some. But Morgan appears more dominate than JRP was. Morgan IS that entire WC offense. JRP was part of the OG offense.
