I can see two reasons behind it: 1. To get more paying rumps in the stands. 2. To whittle down the number of game films your opponents get to see.

Mize is 15-47 vs Taylorsville all time. 5-18 this century. Not a traditional rival since Mize rarely wins. Rivalries are built upon competitiveness, not proximity.
