We played Hattiesburg every year back in the Big 8 days and then we were division rivals for some years through 1980’s and 90’s. And yes, Hattiesburg wins were few and far between through those years. But that was a long time ago and I don’t think that necessarily will affect this game. I still think you have to give Hattiesburg the edge but I look for a much closer game this year. Meridian is vastly improved and this game will IMHO be the best measuring stick for this team to date. Ocean Springs is way down and I think we got the big head against Neshoba Central. We were somewhat better at Starkville but no where near being a top ten team and Columbus is worse than awful. So this game will show me where we stand. And I am glad to play Hattiesburg again. For decades (1920’s-1990’s) Laurel was our biggest rival and with a lot of hate. I miss those days. Man when we played Laurel in any sport, it was going to be physical and very competitive. And Hattiesburg as well to some degree but because we dominated the series in football it was not nearly as heated. Probably around 20 years ago or so we played Hattiesburg at the Rock and that was a fun night for Meridian. I think we won by 40 points and there was probably 7-8K in USM’s stadium including a large contingent from Meridian. Friday, we will be lucky to have 3-4K at Ray Stadium. We had a decent crowd for the Columbus game and this one will probably be a bit larger. But HS football just does not draw large crowds in the present day.

The form said they wanted the September enrollment. If schools are only reporting 15 days counting today September 21st then all numbers will be lower. That's different from the usual October date. Now they have until September 28th to make corrections. My educated guess tells me the numbers can change +/- starting Tuesday morning. The question i have is do you run the risk by adding or subtracting by Monday the 28th of throwing yourself up a class or down a class.

All the numbers and sports schools are playing should be turned in by now.

Good point on UConn. I forgot that they hired Candle from Toledo as their coach. He will have a P4 job sooner rather than later.

I was kind of afraid of this. I read somewhere that 75 players on the roster this year were not on the roster last year. Obviously there is a good bit of turnover nowadays but that many is a recipe for failure. I do think he will have success in the years to come but this year is going to be a struggle. Another thing is Connecticut seems to actually have a decent team this year. Hopefully they can have some success in the Sunbelt. Still have the conference games in front of them.

I think USM had among the most transfer portal turnover of anyone in the country. Sometimes that’s going to work out, but if you don’t hit on enough new guys it can be a mess…. See 2024 Mississippi State. I like Blake Anderson and still think he can succeed there. But he does have to prove that he knows how to navigate this era. Most of his success was in the 2010’s and pre portal or pre NIL. Obviously USM hasn’t been an easy place to win for the last 15 years, either.

From the looks of it the past two games, it does not seem that Will Hall was the problem at all. I get the blowout at Auburn, that was expected. But did anyone see a 28pt blowout loss to UCONN coming? Losing was not going to be a huge surprise. A win felt like a 60/40 win/loss ratio. But that Saturday night felt like the seasons when they had the 23 game losing streak with Ellis Johnson

I have seen only one HHS win in Meridian in my lifetime. No matter how good HHS is or how bad Meridian is when we go there more often than not we get boatraced. So if anyone thinks that HHS will or should win comfortably you dont know much about the Meridian/HHS series. Im not even calling it a rivalry since we have been dominated so much.

Hattiesburg has only beaten Meridian 9 times since 1958. That's pretty wild and that's half the wins.

I did. I didn't realize it was that lopsided either. I figured it would have been a little more even like y'alls history with Laurel.

Go look at the overall series history. Look at our record in Ray Stadium. Its terrible

@VottI didn't realize y'alls win over Meridian last year was the first one in 23 years. Things might be a little bit tighter this time.

Maybe bring out the steam locomotives and Pullman cars. Can't hurt.

Old Big 8 Rivalry. Keep the passenger trains running for this one, just like in the old days.

It’s hard to argue otherwise, but Golding probably deserves credit for keeping the offense similar-ish and not reinventing the wheel. Not saying these guys are on the same level as Chambliss but I recall Nick Fitzgerald and Will Rogers’ final years at State, both with new play callers, and it didn’t go well for either one. It is definitely possible to mess up a good thing and it appears that Ole Miss to this point hasn’t messed up a good thing.

This is going to be a good one. Emotions will be riding high for both teams. Kinda like LSU/ Ole Miss but without all the hate. LOL

In other news Tupelo made a very quality Oxford team look mediocre. Tupelo D is amazing to watch.

I’m sure several will disagree, but I think the success OM has had during the stretch Golding has been the head coach is mostly the result of Chambliss instead of Golding. Take Chambliss off that team and they’re only winning two of those. Unless you want to credit Golding for keeping Chambliss at OM this year. lol.
