The city of Greenville currently has 2 MHSAA schools and 3 MAIS schools within or less than 0.25 miles of the city limits. (O’bannon is attached to the city, but geographically located on the side of the street that is considered out the city limit). How do yall think Greenville would be sports wise if there were only 1 public and 1 private school to cover that entire area?

Realistically they'd be very similar to Greenville Christian. Almost every player of consequence is there atm from that area.

Nearly every private school AND every large public school that competes yearly does that. Larger schools are always stealing home grown talents from smaller schools, but that doesnt seem to be a topic of discussion. The private schools been wreaking havoc taking kids from public school these past 2 years, especially from towns that didnt play football. No offense to anybody, but why is Greenville Christian giving kids an opportunity they didnt have an issue? When these patriarch/private schools, especially those in the lower classes, got and go get these high quality players and playing in the lower class nobody said anything. When the MHSAA told these schools they will apply a multiplier to those schools to properly classify them in the classification, nearly all of them jumped to the MAIS stating it is unfair for the MHSAA to apply a multiplier and determine a class and region based off that. No other smaller schools recruiting players. There may be another school jumping ship soon too to the MAIS.

I have no issue with it. Turn-about is fair play, I was glad to see MRA and Prep get a taste of their own medicine and be embarrassed.

I was just answering the question at hand.

You really think in a scenario where there is only one private and public school in Greenville that they will all pile up at the private school rather than trying to get exposure at their position at the public  school? Greenville Christian are current champions and Greenville St Joe are recent champions who probably will win again this year. Combining those two schools along with Washington Academy, who is the other private school, will simply put too many kids there with very little spots to showcase their abilities. Some of those kids would likely go back to the public side where they came from to get more exposure. Probably would make Greenville public team a better competitive team.

Did you just answer/contradict your own question?

No you said that one school would just look like a Greenville Christian with a bunch of kids receiving incentives to play. I’m saying I think the kids would spread out between both schools and make the lesser competitive school within that town more competitive.

I basically threw that scenario because that is literally the problem to why Greenville and Western Line public schools isnt as competitive in football. The private schools there are getting the better athletes. Greenville St Joe been getting them. Greenville Christian start doing what Greenville St Joe been doing. They are both successful. In regards to Greenville and the other schools in that county outside if Simmons, the other schools in the area dont stand a chance because all the athletes are ending up at 1 or 2 private schools in Greenville. Riverside down the road covering southwest Washington County. Leland to the east covers northeast Washington County. O’ Bannon covers what’s outside Greenville city limits and northwest Washington County. Yet their top athletes are likely heading elsewhere.

Yes consolidation will help not just Greenville but Washington county....Washington County has 8 or 9 schools with only 2/3 being considered successful in football...in the city of Greenville athletes are spread between basically 4/5 high schools which spreads the talent pool really thin...I don't know if consolidation is down the road but it definitely would help not just from pooling talent but also pooling resources and teachers on the district level

I dont know why Greenville has 3 private schools. This is a town of 12000 we are talking about.

For perspective the Jackson metro area has MRA, JA, Prep, Hartfield, Hillcrest, Park Place, Madison St Joe and Clinton Christian. That's roughly 8 major private schools for a population of 600,000 people. That checks out for one school per 75000 people. Greenville in comparison has 1 major private school per 4000.

I'm sure you were just focusing on the MAIS schools, but you left St. Andrews off the list.

You can take Cleveland as the example, though we don’t have the same number of schools public or private. We had two public, one private in a town of 10,000. Now we have one public, one private in the same size town, possibly a little smaller. The area private schools (Bayou and NSA) still recruit our talent, but they’re mostly only successful with the white students from Cleveland. The black kids that they recruit come from other areas, like Rosedale or Shaw, who may not be able to move to Cleveland but can find a way to get to Bayou daily. We had a pretty decent quarterback who was coming up from junior high to high school who suddenly transferred to Bayou Academy recently with no explanation that I’m aware of.

Now I gave all that info for this reason: what kind of success have you seen in Cleveland schools? The basketball teams have won some games, track has won a relay championship (maybe 2, not sure), and football was good that first year of consolidation. The team is fair this year at 6-4 but they didn’t beat anyone of note. There have also been 3 different head football coaches in the short 5 years of the program, so that is contributing to some of the lack of success surely. We were much more successful athletically before we consolidated, though neither school would’ve been considered a powerhouse, per se.

Our boys played Greenville High last Friday and the number of fans on their side was shocking. The total lack of depth on their sideline was noticeable as well. I’ve never been there and knew nothing about their program but it would seem that somebody could get that thing going in the right direction. The OL/DL bodies are there, skill players look decent enough for them to do better than 1-7 or 1-8 or whatever they were. There seem to be bigger problems in Greenville public than meet the eye, but I hope they can get it turned around in a hurry or else that town will dry up like all of the rest of the Delta towns.

That does bring to light how underrated the Greenville Christian coaching staff really was. They played to the level of their talent, which apparently doesn't always happen there.

Lol. They have a juco team playing high school ball. There is very little coaching going on.

Greenwood nearly won 4a State in 2019...

Historically speaking they have not been very good. Recently speaking Greenwood and O'Bannon have been pretty but have no state championships to show for it while being in lesser divisions. It will take a couple years before the talent that they had pre-COVID will come back.

Exactly

Accept/Enterprise Bulldogs Fan says Jimmerson suddenly learned how to coach after eight years on the job, maybe McClendon learned how to be a better coach once he got some decent athletes, too. Take away the last three years and Jimmerson is 31-50.

Good coaches win with good talent - poor coaches don't. Give McClendon some due.

Realistically, anyone could win with that team. Let's be honest, he just needs to stay out of the way.
