The reasoning for going back to 6A has to do more with the Choose Act and private schools. By separating the public and private schools it reduced the numbers to make it more practical for going back to 6A. The public and private schools can still play each other during the season but they will have separate playoffs. Research the Choose Act and how the state was paying students to transfer to private schools and the way AHSAA dealt with it by splitting public and private school playoffs. Many more private schools in AHSAA than in Mississippi. This eliminated the need for Competitive Balance for private schools. There are around 40 private school members of AHSAA. A few competed in the old 6A classification. Most were 5A and below. Also, AHSAA has a revenue sharing deal where they return money to member schools and they even have waived membership fees when revenue is high. I grew up in Mississippi and have been in Alabama several years. I keep of with both states.

It’s a lot more complicated. Research the Choose ACT and Governor suing AHSAA over transfer rules. Before this decision by AHSAA there was a bill in the legislature to take over (by government appointing central board members) the AHSAA. Basically Mississippi doesn’t have the private school problem Alabama had. Private schools enrollment automatically 1.35 times and competitive balance where not wanted by private schools. With all of the above issues this was best route for AHSAA.

In Alabama, where I work for a school district. Homeschool students that enroll to participate in sports take 1 PE class. They do not participate in state testing since they do not take academic classes. They can "transfer" to an out of zone (same district) or out of district school (one time only), but there are some processes/procedures they must meet.. You can look up that information on the Alabama High School Athletic Association's website in their handbook. "That's all I got to say about that." Forrest Gump

I played against Marcus Dupree his freshman and sophomore seasons. His freshman year, he only played defensive back and returned kicks. We beat them 34-6. Their 6 points was on his 100 yard kickoff return! Back then it was not a touchback if kick went in end zone. He fumbled the kick in the end zone, picked it up and smoked everyone right up the sideline. We did not break any long runs, because he would catch anyone that broke over 10 yards past line of scrimmage. His sophomore year they were a much better team. It was our homecoming and we beat them 12-7. Their only score was a pass to the tight end. We hit him pretty good and he would lay down and they would take him out for a few plays. Then he would come back in to play. He did not like to get hit. I think he got better at taking hit his last two years. He definitely had exceptional speed and you had to keep him from breaking the line of scrimmage. We had some linebackers that would take your head off and they punished him all night. Those were my junior and senior years, so I didn’t play against him his best two years.
