Since this week is pretty slow, let’s take a look at the favorites and surprises in the biggest class. Feel free to add a take on your favorite lower classification. I might make a run at handicapping the north half soon, but feel free to input your thoughts.

7A Region 4

Ocean Springs: answering questions about how to move forward after losing a once in a lifetime player, they started slowly, losing on a last second field goal (now there’s a trend) as their offense was struggling. Improving every game since on offense with a new head coach, culminating in a beat down on one of the best teams of the last few years in Picayune. If defense wins championships….

Gulfport: new coach, new QB, some controversy but a load of promise to start the season and a locker room full of talent. They lost close ones to pretty good teams, then got blown out by the defending south champs. Three game losing streak heading into district, but they shouldn’t be challenged until the O.S. game.

Harrison Central: surprising undefeated start, maybe against a schedule set up for that. Good looking QB and offense. Can their momentum carry forward when they hit the big games and possible playoffs? Might have to break away from the traditional late season slump.

Biloxi: probably a playoff team, but just not showing up consistently. A lot of people pulling for the Indians with some of the best facilities in the state, but just not a football first school.

d’Iberville & St. Martin: not much going. Could be a great rivalry game, but that’s about it.

7A Region 3

Oak Grove: probably the most talented skill players starting their season with high expectations, they have met those goals and are looking forward to proving themselves in the playoffs after falling last year. Most around the state have them a shoo in for Oxford, but a few teams have emerged that might give ‘em a game before then.

NW Rankin: surprisingly strong start to the season, having beaten rival Madison Central, I list them second awaiting their matchup with Brandon.

Brandon: surprisingly slow start, losing to two good teams to start the year, they have rebounded and are poised to make their usual playoff run. Seems like that backfield has been there forever. Big question is how they do against Rankin and the favorites, Oak Grove.

Pearl, undefeated, but in question. The program is trying to make a comeback, and have started the season well. Definite contenders, but has their schedule prepared them for the big games?

Meridian & Petal: might pull an upset or two.
