Dawg83
State basically played 2 on 5 basketball in both games this week. Hubbard and Murphy combined - 98 points in last 2 games Rest of team combined - 47 points in last 2 games The three point D will (understandably) get a lot of attention but our offense outside of 2 guys has totally vanished. Nobody else even broke double digits in a game this week. Edited February 1 by Dawg83
sportsmaniac10
Tough day for state . Missouri is a much better team than I expected . I still think both Ole Miss and State did miserably against them defending the 3. Neither seemed prepared to guard Grill which is a head scratcher since he’s the top 3 point shooter in the SEC and shooting almost 50% from behind the arc for the season. You’d think both teams would have been better prepared for that. Ole Miss loses a tough one to Auburn. Nothing bad about losing to them overall. I thought Auburn played very well. I heard many say that was Auburns best game of the season. Honestly I don’t feel that way. Ole Miss just continues to make the same glaring mistakes and Auburn (like any quality team) punished them for it. There’s nothing special about that. That’s what good teams do. Overall it was the same old song and dance…rebounds and free throws. The offensive rebounds were back breakers. At least 4 different possessions with Ole Miss chipping into the lead and Auburn comes down and grabs 2-3 offensive rebounds after missed shots and eventually drains a 3. Free throws were an issue again. Overall they shot better in the second half but the missed free throws in the first half really changed the trajectory of the game in my opinion. Instead of tying the game or taking the lead , you miss those 6 first half free throws and allow Auburn to weather the storm and keep 2-3 possession cushion. And Brakefields first half play really hurt as well, 1-4 from The free throw line (tech call 1-5 because of the 1 and 1) and 4 turnovers. And Malik Dia has to decide what kind of player he’s gonna be. We need the beast that grabbed 19 rebounds against Alabama, not the guy that he’s been since who grabs 2-3 rebounds, struggles with the physicality, and overall is a non factor. Half way thru SEC play and Ole Miss is 5-4 and State is 4-5. I think Ole Miss will struggle to get to 9-9 in SEC play by the end. Still have to go to Auburn, Vandy, and Florida and home games against UK, Tennessee, and State. That Texas A and M game is going to haunt us later I fear. State I see a path to 10-8. Still got some of the bottom half of the conference and some of the tougher games left at home. Not at easy path but 10-8 and I think you go into post season very pleased and chance to get a very strong seed in the NCAA. Dawg83
The basketball Iron Bowl (x2) is going to be must see TV. Strong case Auburn and Bama are the two best teams in the country this year. I’m not sure where exactly in the league Mizzou ranks but they’re impressive. And have the domination of shooting, defense, and depth to possibly make it past the first weekend in the NCAAT. Dawg83
State’s metrics took a big hit after getting crushed at home and I think they’ve fallen to around the 7 or 8 seed line now. Quite a drop from a few weeks ago when some had them as high as a 2 seed (I thought that was too high but I didn’t see this stretch coming either). It’s crucial they get back to winning soon or this could start to get uncomfortable in terms of the bubble. Nothing tanks your metrics like getting crushed at home like State did on Saturday. Ole Miss is probably a 5 or 6 seed right now. Big opportunity for a big win with Kentucky coming to town tomorrow. I am wondering if OM wishes UK hadn’t just gotten smoked at home by Arkansas. UK seems to bounce back well from losses. But this UK team plays approximately zero defense so if OM is making shots I think they have a great chance to win. Dawg83
Big win for the Rebels. Having wins over Bama and Kentucky is loud. They are very close to an NCAAT lock already. 24 assists and 1 turnover…. Never seen a state line quite like that. It wasn't a "must win" but definitely a "needed win" for Ole Miss. This win gives some cushion for Ole Miss to lose a game they shouldn't- which can definitely happen. Dawg83
No denying that Beard is an elite coach. I’m not sure what kind of tournament ceiling OM has with a bit of a weakness at rebounding but they’ll be a single digit seed and I would not want to play them. sportsmaniac10
Lady Rebs miss a big opportunity to get a signature home win in what has become Coach Yo’s calling card. Post on social media for the crowd to come and support and then the team comes out and lays an egg. Then she usually follows up with some post like “stick with us. We will learn from this”. Safe to say that in year 7 we have yet to learn from this. Lady Rebs dug themselves into a hole early trailing 24-9 after the first quarter but fought back and took a 2 point lead going into the 4th. Early in the 4th, Lady Rebs built a 7 point lead with about 8 minutes to go and that is when the wheels came off and they imploded. Got out scored 24-7 to close the last 8 minutes and lost by 10. Now losing to Oklahoma isn’t a bad loss. All of Ole Miss’s losses this year are to top 20 teams (except the Texas A and M loss) This Oklahoma team is solid and will likely have a shot at the elite 8 this year. But again it’s the manner in which Ole Miss lost and continues to lose games (now 10-42 vs top 25 in the Coach Yo era). Offense continues to struggle and show no positive signs of improvement against any team that is remotely competent. 7 seasons and we still have no one that’s a threat from behind the arc and struggle protecting the ball against the better teams. The only reason this teams stats don’t look abysmal is due to the fact that she scheduled 6 SWAC teams and a few other mediocre non conference games. Tonight’s showing: 56 points 34% from the floor 0-12 from 3 11-20 from the free throw line 22 turnovers *Also Oklahoma’s star all American post player didn’t play tonight due to illness. I don’t really care how good your defense is. When your offense is this weak, you won’t be able to beat an elite team. And the worst part is that coach Yo says this is one of her best offensive teams she’s coached at Ole Miss. I could rant for a while on this but I’ll save everyone the time. I think we’ve seen about all we’re going to get out of Coach Yo. Edited Friday at 08:38 PM by sportsmaniac10

I think we’ve seen about all we’re going to get out of Coach Yo. I'm with ya, bro. For some reason, or for an obvious reason I guess, I didn't get my hopes up once I saw where Oklahoma was ranked. I was like, well, they are fairly highly ranked and we are playing them at home. It's a done deal. Not a lot of excitement from the fanbase either judging by that crowd. It was pretty sparse. I notice some other women's college hoops games have huge crowds by comparison but admittedly most of those schools have bad men's teams i.e. LSU, South Carolina, Texas so it’s almost like they might be looking for something to get excited about because their men’s teams ain’t it. Maybe we just aren't a women's basketball town like some have been trying to say for years. I want OM to do well in women's hoops but it is admittedly very unathletic looking, and I don't give two hoots about women's hoops if it's not OM. I'm always reluctant to pick on Yo too much given what we she took over because we were slap atrocious. I also wonder whay her ceiling is as well because that offense is rough, rough. Bulldogs4 Posted yesterday at 11:37 AM Share Posted yesterday at 11:37 AM That is an interesting situation regarding the Ole Miss women. They are a good team but have not been able to move any higher. Fan support can be fickle. State has struggled this year but against lowly Arkansas there were 6500 in attendance Thursday night. Obviously Schaefer gets the credit for building up the fan base. But they have stuck with the team since he left as well. Must wins for both squads. Ole Miss, just because you don’t want to follow up two good wins with a bad loss @ LSU. If Ole Miss just plays medium good, this is a game they should win. State plays at Georgia. Both teams need a win in the worst way. Georgia should win but I will be looking to see if we can regain the type of play that we had at Memphis and at Vandy on the road earlier in the season. We will see.
Dawg83 Posted yesterday at 02:16 PM Author Share Posted yesterday at 02:16 PM I don’t think OM should have any issues with LSU. They’ve been getting smoked routinely of late. In my opinion that’s the worst team in the league, as SC has been more competitive in spite of a worse record. I think this is a good matchup for State and I’d feel very good if the game was in Starkville, but it’s in Athens where UGA has been really good. Vegas had UGA favored by 1.5, so this is basically a toss up. I think I like State to bounce back and play well in this one. Hopefully the open week has them refreshed, although supposedly the team has had a flu bug they’ve been fighting so hopefully that doesn’t have a huge effect. Dawg83
State escapes UGA with a 1 point win. Played a very good first half then just survived late. Terrible FT shooting from State, 6-18. But to steal what Shane Power tweeted, that lady screaming bloody murder before every free throw was effective. Lol.
Bulldogs4
A win is a win is a win. But we have got to shoot FT’s better. And I like playing Florida with them coming off this big win over Auburn. Often times it is tough to duplicate that kind of effort two games in a row. Plus our confidence will be back with this win and we can play loose and free. Kind of got the monkey off our back. Who would have thought we would have three home losses and three road wins at this point in the season? Just shows you how good the SEC is this year. Dawg83
Holy smokes what a collapse by LSU. OM down 11 with under 3 minutes left and finished the game on a 13-0 run. Won on a tap in at the buzzer. LSU made an absolute mockery out of the end of that game. It is hard to blow it as much as they did. But certainly OM deserves credit for sticking with it. Dawg83
That is the kind of game that gets coaches fired…. And Matt McMahon’s seat certainly feels warm when you compare how much LSU has struggled as compared to the quick turnarounds other schools are having…

Dawg83
I think that pretty much makes Ole Miss an NCAAT lock now. 7 SEC wins already? Yeah they’d pretty much have to lose every game the rest of the season to not get in. Seems highly unlikely. State’s path to anything better than a 8 or 9 seed was starting to get iffy but winning today was a big step toward getting back on course. Next 3 are Florida, at OM, and A&M. Really need at least 1 win out of that stretch, 2 would be great. That’s a tough stretch but two of those games are at home and the road game is against a team you did beat already….If you’re a Top 25 team, you don’t go 0-3 in that stretch. Bulldogs4
Great comeback by Ole Miss for the win. I knew this game would be tough. It was rivalry game on the road. Never easy to win but what a finish. As I said earlier a win is a win. Boy if State and Ole Miss win their midweek games, next week in Oxford will be two top twenty if not top 15 teams. What an atmosphere that will be. Basketball is fun again.
