2019 Egg Bowl Butterfly Effect

Recommended Posts

I don't know if anyone read the article in The Athletic last November, but there are quite a few interesting bits of info. It attests that two firings (Luke/Moorhead) following the Elijah Moore penalty, OM's XP miss, and all that followed afterward ultimately impacted nearly 300 coaching careers. It's a long but good article if you have a sub to The Athletic.

BUT....

What if Elijah Moore didn't get a penalty, OM scores the XP and has the momentum going into OT and wins that game? There were MANY rumblings already in Starkville that Moorhead was going to be replaced win or lose. But the dramatic fashion of the win saved his job (for a few weeks 🤦‍♂️). So with a loss he's gone for sure. But if he was let go right then, Matt Luke likely stays in Oxford with the win, right? So no Kiffin. No high powered offense in 2020. Does it mean no Corrall? RichRod is still running the offense. So what is Elijah Moore's projected draft spot?

And in Starkville... do they hire Billy Napier (like so many assumed) or...  as @Schrute has speculated, is Lane Kiffin coaching a different SEC team in Mississippi? How would things be looking right now for both teams after a 2020 of Luke/Rodriguez in Oxford and Kiffin/Leby in Starkville? Is Shrader still at QB? Did Keytaon Thompson stick around?

It's always so wild to think about the "what if's" of college football.

Luke gets another year if they win that game. Matt Corral probably transfers. And Kiffin is likely at Arkansas now. No idea who OM would hire after 2020 though.

State hires Joe Judge if they fire Moorhead a month earlier. It was 99% done anyway until the Giants surprisingly offered him. If the timing is sooner then he’d be at State right now. And it would still probably be the Garrett Shrader show at QB.

This is fairly likely... which makes that Egg Bowl loss the best Egg Bowl loss in Ole Miss history.

That's what many MSU fans have said about the 2008 Egg Bowl as well.
